Thorncliffe Chess Club is a non-profit, online youth chess club that runs weekly sessions over Zoom. We offer a fun and welcoming space where kids of all levels can play, learn, and connect — from anywhere.

Our story

Thorncliffe Chess Club began in 2022 with a simple mission: to create a fun, inclusive space where youth could explore the game of chess. After a brief pause, the club has returned with renewed energy and a stronger commitment than ever to helping young players grow — building confidence, strategy, and friendships along the way.

Meet the team

Our head coach is a 2000+ rated Serbian player, ranked in the top 5% worldwide. With a passion for youth coaching and years of experience, he brings insight, patience, and a love of the game to every session.

Thorncliffe Chess Club was co-founded by Matthew Ng and Richard Ng, two passionate chess enthusiasts. While Richard helped lay the foundation for the club, Matthew now leads its day-to-day operations with over nine years of experience in the game. Though not a competitive player, Matthew started the club to make chess more welcoming and accessible for youth — especially those just getting started. As a dedicated volunteer, he oversees the club’s logistics, events, and community engagement.
